A Chalky Overhang!

With only fifty five minutes left of August 2008 I thought that I would introduce my first picture to the group taken in Dover this morning when there was a bit of sunshine around after what has been a bleak August! This picture shows Albion Place, only a step away from the docks (where the ferries arrive from France) yet concealed from the dual-carriageway by a row of grand (in their day) Georgian houses. The accommodation here is much more modest and is very much squeezed in between the Georgian terraces and the cliffs. They can’t get much sunshine in the afternoon and the omnipresent cliff-face provides shelter but, also, risk. Fancy having these chalk cliffs towering over you?

Ever since the theme for this month was announced, I have been scratching my head trying to get an idea, even resorting to searching through an Encyclopedia to no avail ( having no imagination didn’t help).
Then on Bank Holiday Monday, there I was walking to work when I noticed I was all alone, not a soul to be seen, this is it just the inspiration I needed, so here it is my lonely journey to work on a Bank Holiday in August.

Well, congratulations to Bri-n for single-handedly jinxing the entire British weather for a complete month! Cheers Bri-n!

Within a day or two of him announcing this project’s launch theme of “August” I knew exactly what I wanted to shoot and, given that the theme was for the month of August as well, I didn’t really anticipate any major problems.
All I needed was about a week of uninterrupted typically August weather… y’know the sort of thing… hot and dry (possibly bordering on heatwave even). The type of weather that dries out and cracks the earth.

Yeah. Right.

So what do we get over here in the UK? Clouds, rain, more clouds, more rain, overcast, more rain, and so on. The odd spot of sunshine here and there, but not the sort I was after.

Now were I a certain person who shall remain nameless I’d spend the next ten minutes or so bitching about the vagaries of Mother Nature. But me being me, whilst still waiting right to the last week of August to see if things would brighten up, I just started thinking about my “Plan B”. Which is what I’ve ended up with.

So what does August mean to me? Having toyed with the idea of an interpretation based upon the adjective (as in “an august personality”) I then decided to revert to the more common usage as in August the month and, in thinking about this, gradually came to the conclusion that its probably the month I like least of all!

For me August conjures up images of hot days. Really hot days, as in scorching heatwave hot… and lasting for ages. Drought-inducing weather in fact.
Now whilst I enjoy high temperatures it seems to me there’s something about August weather that sets it apart from the months either side… its as though there’s a “fierceness” about it that neither July or September share.
But there’s something else as well, and this is when it dawned on me that I don’t actually like August very much. For, underlying the superficially sunny, cheery days there always seems to me to be something rather unpleasant lurking.
The first hint maybe of coming rottenness… a foreshadowing of decay and corruption. And maybe something even darker, though I can’t quite put my finger on it.

All elements of which fed into into my choice of an image (in both “Plan A” and “Plan B”). How well it works is another matter entirely of course. And spoiled to no small extent by the fact that the day I finally did the shoot was quite overcast, the perversity of the weather holding good to the last by depriving me of even an hour or so of really bright sunshine! So the quality of the light wasn’t as I’d hoped for.

And don’t be fooled by the fact I’ve only contributed one photo for this, the inaugural month’s theme. I actually shot about fifty or so frames ’til I’d got close to what I wanted!

The second rice plantations of the year. I’ve photographed the first rice plantations this year at the same place, but not exactly same angle.

August day 16, It’s raining at the moment just when I pressed the shutter.

9 of August, I had a chance to the “HSR Taoyuan station”. but I have no way to photographed the “catenaryscape”. it’s elevated railway in countryside but underground in station.

When I think of August, two things come to mind, kids return to school and the heat/humidity.

Most, if not all, the kids in Alabama returned to school last week. My girls were sort of ready to go back. Both are in high school, so they were ready to hang with their friends a bit more. However, neither were very interested in studying. I can’t say I blame them with subjects as Chemistry, Algebra 2/Trig, Geometry and Honors English. I remember those days.

Living in the south, we know heat and humidity. This time of year the Gulf of Mexico is churning, sending plenty of moisture our way. Some days are so bad the air conditioner doesn’t help. I guess it’s good we have fans. Ah, the lovely Dog Days of Summer (our village had a festival today in its honor…go figure). :)

I’ve always been fascinated by tall things, not unlike myself. In one of the earlier grades of school I remember planting a seed for a sunflower plant, but I have no recollection of what happened to it. I don’t know when they bloom in Florida (or if they even grow there naturally, as I don’t recall seeing any), but here in southwest Ohio August is the month when they really come to their fullest glory.

Growing up my family didn’t take too many vacations. We simply didn’t have the money for such things and while that sounds sad there are moments when I’m glad we didn’t find ourselves on some back country road in search of accommodations for the evening, as evidenced below.

It’s been a long time, I just sit beside my window and take so many pictures as same angle as this one. and put it into the DPP application to see how clear the resolutions are.

It’s interesting to see how definite the mosaic tile is, when viewing the original size, and moire is visible or not, should I apply the noise reduction or not.

But once you convert and save an image, there are always something different. some image quality only exist in a certain application and raw file.

But it is good to join the Flickr, a good image doesn’t have to be that big.
