Its gradually dawned on me that whoever selects a theme for a coming month has a bit of an advantage over everyone else… cos they know what the themes’s gonna be before anyone else.
Maybe that’s inconsequential. Dunno. But I certainly took full advantage of the… er… advantage with this month’s theme!

For it had actually popped into my head at the beginning of last month. And when I say “popped into my head” that’s exactly what I mean. Conscious that it was down to me to choose the theme for the following month (this is February I’m talking about now) I thought I’d better start giving a kick to the old brain cells.
Yet no sooner had I thought that than “ping”, there it was… Elegance.

Like a couple of my past themes my initial reaction was to dismiss it.

“Rubbish” thinks I. But it just wouldn’t budge. So eventually I surrendered and decided to go with it.
Once that decision was made I couldn’t restrain myself from mulling over how to interpret it visually.
Tossed a few ideas around, then eventually settled on what I’ve done here. And took the actual pics very shortly after. Oops!

Still, they were taken specifically for the theme, so guess that’s ok innit.

Now here’s the strange thing, to which I’ve already alluded in comments on both Tam’s and Mark’s contributions.
And it seems the strange thing also extends to Darren’s pic… er… once I’d worked out what his was actually a photo of!

For it seems we’ve all settled (in one way or another) on the female form as best presenting our perception of elegance.
What a coincidence! How weird.

Why should this be? Consequently for the past few days I’ve been mulling over whether it has any significance and if so, what that significance may be.

I will say that I’d played around with other possibilities… the elegance of some coding for example; the elegance of certain scientific formulae; the elegance of certain pieces of prose. As visual presentations none of them may have offered much potential… but perfectly legitimate nevertheless.

I also messed around with abstract lines and shapes, trying to “distill” so to speak the essence of elegance.
Came pretty close with a couple of attempts but ultimately I found them unsatisfactory.
So decided to go with the product of my very first little session with the theme.

Neither of these pics are exactly what I was after, but as close as I could get given what was available to me at the time.
And these are also a bit of a first for me in the sense that this is the first occasion I’ve spent far longer on post-processing than in actually setting up and taking the pics.

Way too long probably… but, for me at least, the result is quite pleasing.

Elegant. Wow. A wonderful theme, which immediately brought to mind 1950′s Hollywood, Monte Carlo, men with canes and women with wraps.

Oh so NOT my life.

Hell…. I ran a list of local restaurants through my head thinking I might be able to arrange for a short photo session in one of the finer local establishments, where I might have found elegant surroundings. Not possible. Oh, we have some nice places to eat, but elegant? Not quite….

But I did luck out in a major way…

My daughter is attending her first prom in this, her junior year of high school. She is very much a jeans and sweatshirt kind of girl and has, quite literally, one dress: her school concert band dress. Until now. Now she has a prom dress. A beautiful, iridescent and as-elegant-as-we’re-gonna-get dress. And while prom isn’t until the later part of April she so desperately wanted to try on the dress, get some pictures taken, and show them off to friends at school.

Pictures? Beautiful, elegant dress? Group project connection? Oh hell yeah. The heavens have smiled upon me today.

And not only did the heavens smile down upon me with this stroke of luck, but during the course of writing this little blurb on WP I think I may have another photograph in mind. And that would be a true bonus all round.
